Strengthening Cultural Understanding Across the Education Sector

As a Dharug-led social enterprise with more than 20 years of community impact across Sydney and beyond, we champion genuine engagement with Traditional Owners as the foundation of meaningful connection to Country.

Muru Mittigar’s Cultural Awareness Program aims to develop cultural sensitivity within the education sector.

The program will assist Educators to understand why Aboriginal people are sensitive to particular issues e.g. the stolen generation and provide strategies for discussing and managing these topics respectfully.

Our Focus

  • We provide a culturally appropriate and safe training environment which affords teaching professionals the opportunity to share meaningful information respectfully.
  • The presentation has been developed to assist educators to gain a greater understanding and awareness of cultural values and provide strategies to share this knowledge within the classroom.
  • Using numerous techniques and resources we strive to provide detailed information in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, culture and spirituality. We believe authentic and quality cultural awareness and understanding is fundamental to key learning outcomes.
  • The program will provide information about the importance of identity and connection to Country/traditional lands, the impacts of colonisation and the changes to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people, communities, land and environment.

Community Outcomes

Muru Mittigar’s Teacher Professional Development program strengthens cultural understanding across school communities. Educators gain deeper insight into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity, connection to Country, and the impacts of colonisation, helping them approach sensitive topics with respect and confidence. The program equips teachers with practical strategies to embed authentic First Nations perspectives in the classroom and fosters more inclusive, culturally safe learning environments. This shared capability supports stronger relationships with local Aboriginal communities and contributes to better engagement and outcomes for Aboriginal students.
