What Is Indigenous Knowledge (Ik)?

Indigenous Knowledge, or ‘IK’ is defined as knowledge held currently and continually developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Normally, we don’t say ‘traditional’ as it’s important to remember that Indigenous Knowledge is constantly changing and evolving.

Examples of traditional knowledge include:

  • Agricultural techniques
  • Art techniques
  • Hunting or fishing techniques

Examples of ‘indigenous cultural expression’:

  • Knowledge of heritage or identity
  • Songs and stories
  • Dances forms
  • Art, designs and crafts

Who Owns Traditional Knowledge and Indigenous Cultural Expression?

First Nations people are the guardians and owners of traditional knowledge and Indigenous cultural expression on behalf of their communities.
