Refreshing Summer Slushies using Aboriginal Bush Foods

Summer in Australia calls for vibrant, refreshing drinks that are as visually appealing as they are delicious. One way to elevate your summer refreshment is by incorporating Aboriginal bush foods – native ingredients that bring unique flavours, colours and nutrients to your beverages.

At Muru Mittigar, we celebrate the richness of Aboriginal culture and the incredible versatility of native ingredients. Today, we’re sharing a simple, healthy and fun bush food slushy recipe that is perfect for summer gatherings or a cooling treat on a hot day.

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen berries (such as bush raspberries or native finger limes)
  • 1 cup coconut water or sparkling water
  • 1–2 tbsp lemon myrtle syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp wattleseed (optional, for a nutty, coffee-like undertone)
  • 1–2 tbsp Davidson’s plum puree or Kakadu plum powder (for colour and tang)

Optional Garnish:

  • Fresh mint or lemon myrtle leaves
  • Extra finger lime pearls for popping bursts of citrus

Instructions

1. Prepare Your Ingredients

  • Wash and lightly crush your berries if using fresh.
  • If using Kakadu or Davidson’s plum powder, mix with a small amount of water to create a smooth paste.

2. Blend the Slushy

  1. Combine ice cubes, berries, coconut water, syrup and wattleseed (if using) in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and icy, adding more liquid if needed to achieve a slushy consistency.
  3. Stir in Davidson’s plum or Kakadu plum for a vibrant colour and tangy flavour.

3. Serve and Garnish

  • Pour into chilled glasses and top with finger lime pearls or a sprig of fresh mint.
  • Serve immediately for the most refreshing experience.
