Partnering for Change: Muru Mittigar and OzHarvest Supporting Community Food Security

For over 20 years, Muru Mittigar, a proud First Nations social enterprise, has been working in and with local communities to create lasting, positive change. As part of this mission, we have partnered with OzHarvest, one of Australia’s leading food rescue organisations, to ensure that nutritious food is accessible to those who need it most.

OzHarvest: A Leader in Food Rescue

OzHarvest has become a household name through its dedication to preventing food waste and delivering meals to people in need. Their distinctive yellow vans are a familiar sight in our communities, collecting surplus food and distributing it to vulnerable individuals and families. In addition to their practical work, OzHarvest also plays a key role in raising awareness around sustainable food practices and the importance of food security across Australia.

A Collaboration for Community

In April 2021, Muru Mittigar proudly joined forces with OzHarvest to extend these efforts within our own community. Together, we provide self-serve food hampers that are freely available from our reception area while stocks last. These hampers typically include fresh bread, fruit, vegetables and limited pantry items, helping to alleviate food insecurity among community members, particularly during times of rising living costs. This service is open to anyone in need. In alignment with our values of inclusivity and respect, we encourage recipients to take only what they need, ensuring there’s enough to support as many community members as possible.

How You Can Get Involved

If you’re looking to support or access our food security initiatives, there are several ways to get involved through Muru Mittigar:

  • Visit our centre: Community members in need are welcome to collect free food hampers from our reception area during business hours.

  • Support our services: Businesses and individuals can contribute through donations, volunteering, or partnership opportunities to help us expand the reach of this essential service.

  • Raise awareness: Share information about the Muru Mittigar/OzHarvest collaboration within your networks to help us connect with more people who may benefit.

By supporting this partnership, you are not only helping to reduce food waste — you’re also contributing to stronger, more resilient Aboriginal and broader communities.
