Reconciliation is often spoken about as an end goal, but in truth it is an ongoing journey. It is not something we “achieve” and move past — it is something we actively live, every day, through our actions, our decisions and the way we walk alongside one another.
At its heart, reconciliation in action is about respect, understanding, truth telling and shared responsibility. It means acknowledging the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples — not just in words, but through meaningful and sustained action. It means creating spaces where Culture is valued, voices are heard and opportunities are real.
For Muru Mittigar, reconciliation is embedded in everything we do. It is reflected in our commitment to creating employment pathways, supporting Community and strengthening connection to Country. It shows in the way we invest in people, build skills and create opportunities for independence and growth. Every program, partnership and project is an opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive and respectful future. But reconciliation is not the responsibility of one organisation alone. It belongs to all of us.
Because the impacts of the past are still present. Because understanding takes time. Because relationships must be nurtured continuously. And because real change is built through consistent effort, not one-off moments.
Reconciliation is not a single event on the calendar — it is a daily practice. It lives in the conversations we have, the respect we show and the choices we make. It is about listening, learning and being willing to do better.
Importantly, reconciliation in action also means accountability. It asks us to tell the harsh truths, reflect on where we are now, recognise where gaps still exist and commit to closing them. It challenges us to move beyond acknowledgement into tangible outcomes that empower communities and create lasting impact.
When we approach reconciliation as an ongoing journey, we shift from intention to impact; we move from words to action; we begin to build stronger, more genuine relationships that are grounded in respect, trust, and shared purpose. Reconciliation doesn’t end, and that’s exactly why it matters.
Every step forward, no matter how small, helps create a future where Culture is strengthened, communities thrive and everyone has the opportunity to walk together with understanding and respect.
Ahead of Reconciliation Day on Monday 1st June, we wanted to conclude this post with a quote from Muru Mittigar’s Executive Officer, Uncle Wayne Cornish — a proud Ngyimpaa man, born and bred on Dharug country:
“Reconciliation day is like the start of spring. It is an indication of the past and a symbol for the days that lay ahead. Change is inevitable, how we respond to change is what makes a difference. Each day, every one of us has the opportunity to make a change and make a difference in someone’s life. There’s no key ingredient or secret formula to reconciliation, but acknowledging change and being open to moving together harmoniously could be what changes the world.”
We acknowledge the Dharug people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live and work. We acknowledge the Elders, both past and present. Our organisation, in partnership with the Aboriginals of NSW, is working to place First Peoples living cultures and histories at the core of our practice.
