Muru Mittigar means ‘Pathway to Friends’ in Darug language (Traditional Aboriginal custodians of our area). Muru Mittigar enables you to participate and interact with members of the local Aboriginal community through the exciting educational and enriching cultural activities on offer. With a focus on providing employment opportunities for Aboriginal people, Muru Mittigar also presents positive outcomes for the local community, by creating a meeting place for sharing cultures.
Muru Mittgar is a unique organisation which seeks to advance Aboriginal culture, and in particular Darug culture, improve the economic and social capacity of Aboriginal people, and empower their meaningful participation in enterprises that enhance their role as traditional custodians of 'country'.
Muru Mittigar is an incorporated, not for profit company established under the Centres Incorporation Act 1984. Its constitution provides for the establishment of a Board of Directors, the establishment and maintenance of a Public Fund (the Muru Mittigar Education Research Fund), the acquisition of property and the employment of staff.
Castlereagh (Penrith Lakes Scheme and its adjacent environs) is a special place for the Darug Aboriginal people. The Darug, in particular the 'Mulgoa clan', occupied this land for thousands of years and for generations they hunted game, fished and gathered plant food. For the Darug, Castlereagh was also a 'special meeting place', a 'pathway to friends' (of the Darug) and other Aboriginal tribal groups.
The Darug remain the traditional custodians of the Castlereagh and take great pride in their rich cultural history, particularly evidenced in the abundant archaeological artefacts which continue to be found in the area.
